Situated just a 45-minute drive away from Kuala Lumpur airport and 20 kilometres from the city centre, Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah, simply known as KGSAAS, is one of Malaysia’s premier golf resorts.  The golf course is set in the royal township of Shah Alam, which is the capital city of the State of Selangor Darul Ehsan.  The 27-hole golf course was designed by Thompson Wolveridge and Associates, including five-time Open champion, Peter Thompson.

Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah was open in 1994 and consists of three, nine hole loops, called President, Sultan and Alam Shah.  Each of the three loops start from the clubhouse and drop away, before climbing back up towards the clubhouse, at the end of the nine holes.  The natural undulations of the land have been used in addition to the lake and trees, to create an aesthetically pleasing venue for a round of golf.

The big competitions use a combination of the Sultan and Alam Shah loops, as the best hole out of the 27, has to be the par-5 Dragon hole, which is the second hole on the Sultan loop.  Whereas some of the fairways can appear to be quite wide at KGSAAS, this is not one of them, where a slightly elevated tee shot must be played onto a narrow fairway.  A wide creek then comes into play on the second shot, as the ball must be hit over the hazard, before climbing to a green, which is well guarded by bunkers.

This hole is a good example of what to expect at this golf course, as although they are not as testing as the Dragon hole, the same principles apply, with wider fairways offering better scoring opportunities.  Each set of nine holes contain some lovely par-3’s, with water and elevation changes keeping every visitor mentally tuned in to the action.  KGSAAS is a golf course where players leave, not only having enjoyed their round of golf and the quality of the golf course but also the challenge it presented.  That being said, it is not the toughest course in Malaysia and good scores are definitely possible.

If you were thinking of playing at KGSAAS but do not have the time, the great news is the course is lit up at night, allowing players to take to the course following a day’s work or sightseeing.

The well designed clubhouse, features a swimming pool and other sports facilities, such as squash, tennis and lawn bowls.  There is also a children’s playground, café and outdoor grill, so the whole family can visit KGSAAS and have a good time.

Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah is a golf course which combines a good challenge, with very playable holes, making good scoring a possibility.  The facilities are also good, making it well worth a visit.
