Sydney golf courses

Sydney is one of the largest cities in Australia and is well known to tourists from around the world.  The capital of New South Wales, Sydney is home to the world’s biggest natural harbour and the city and surrounding area spreads from the coast to the Blue Mountains in the west, Macarthur to the south and Hawkesbury to the north.

A Sydney golf holiday will leave many lasting memories, from both on and off the course.  Some of Australia’s most famous landmarks are found in Sydney and you cannot fail to miss the Sydney Opera House, with its sail-like design and it is possible to catch a show and enjoy a guided tour of the building.

Another unmissable sight in Sydney is the Harbour Bridge.  The bridge carries rail, vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic between the Sydney central business district and the North Shore.  The adventurous can book to climb the bridge and enjoy fantastic views of the city below.

After climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, you may feel like something more relaxing and Bondi is one of Australia’s most iconic beaches.  Sit back and soak up the sun or try your hand at surfing with the locals in some of the most reliable waves in the country.

However, you are going to be hard pressed for time to fit everything in during a Sydney golf holiday thanks to the great choice of courses.  The Greg Norman designed Vintage Golf Club Hunter Valley is a popular Sydney golf course and can be combined with Bonnie Doon Golf Club and St Michaels Golf Club to create an unforgettable golf break.

Bonnie Doon Golf Club is one of Australia's most famous golf clubs began with the assembly of 'golf crazy cranks' at the home of Marrickville Doctor Charles Adam Patrick in 1897. Now, more than a century later, it's a club with a host of traditions, the third-oldest in Sydney, and rare in that it's been in three different locations.

The layout at Bonnie Doon tries to mimic the work of nature, with a mixture of irregular undulations, wispy roughnesses and rugged bunker lips that seem to have been created from years of wind and rain. There is an abundance of undulating sandy soil and some wonderful vegetation. Both aspects stimulate the feeling of playing a very natural golf course.

The vineyards and the Brokenback mountain ranges in the distance provide a stunning backdrop for a memorable round of golf.  The Hunter Valley Golf Course is an 18 hole, par-71 course and short by modern standards.  It plays to 6,500 yards, with the longest hole being the 563 yard par-6 9th hole.  There is a total of five par-3’s, nine par-4’s and four par-5’s on the course, with three of the par-5 holes coming in the final five holes.

There are three tee positions on each hole, so you can play the one that suits.  Despite not being particularly long Hunter Valley Golf Course is challenging due to the variety of holes.  The round begins with a short par-4 but you must play a tee shot over water and the water runs all the way along the right side of the fairway, to the green.  There are also two bunkers protecting the front of the green which must be avoided.

The first par-3 hole at Hunter Valley Golf Course is the 3rd hole and this offers a good chance for a birdie.  The only hazards are two bunkers which are located to the front right of the green and the putting surface is mostly flat.  Getting your ball on the green from the tee is key on this hole as you will not find a better chance to make birdie on the course.

As highlighted above, the 9th hole is the longest hole on the course and it is also the first par-5 at Hunter Valley Golf Course.  Water runs across the middle of the fairway so you will need to layup ahead of that while avoiding the fairway bunkers.  The green is situated on the left, behind a row of trees and the big, undulating putting surface is a real test.

The Hunter Valley Golf Course is kept in top condition throughout the year and you can stay onsite thanks to the Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley.  This resort has over 300 rooms, including deluxe rooms, suites and villas plus a choice of restaurant and a spa.  If you would like to stay in this lovey region of Australia, you can book to stay at the resort and play a round of golf at Hunter Valley Golf Course.

According to Australian Golf Digest, "There's something to say about a course that welcomes you with open arms, a club that caters to everyone, but does so without losing its true and original identity-that being one of the country's leading golf resorts.

The two standout features of The Vintage’s closing nine are variety and course conditioning. Norman is economical in his spread of long, short, straight and doglegged holes, while there is a solid mixture of brutal and forgiving green complexes. Water hazards have also been used to good effect. Long hitters can excel on the short and driveable par 4s, but will be forced to risk it all when heading to par 5s in two. Par 3s level the field as each of the two (12 and 17) have water in sight that requires strong iron strikes from every golfer.

The conditioning of the course should also be commended. Lush green couch fairways inspire confidence in the approach shots, but are challenging enough to give sufficient run from the tee. The rugged bunkers are a signature of Norman’s ethos – tall and intimidating Rugged bunkers are the hallmarks of Norman 's style – tall and daunting, but with an perfect amount of sand to reward solid strikes.
