Bukit Unggul Country Club is a  very pretty and well-designed course set in a valley about 45 minutes from the centre of Kuala Lumpur.  Playing this hilly golf course requires good course management and sensible club selection. Not in great condition but still fun to play and excellent value especially at weekends.

The initial impression at Bukit Unggul Country Club is quite positive with the lush jungle providing an attractive backdrop to the undulating course which is home to a wide variety of local wildlife and plants.  However the fairways and the tee boxes spoil the experience and suffer from a lack of maintenance. They also have issues with the bunkers which are likely to be full of water following a heavy downpour.  The greens are much better and the undulating surfaces usually run true although the edges of some of them have been damaged by the wild boars that come out at night to dig for worms.  Whilst on the subject of wildlife – this is a jungle course so there are plenty of scavenging monkeys waiting for you to leave your belongings unattended.

A fairly gentle start as you tee off from an elevated tee box into the valley below with a slight dogleg.  The second is a relatively straight forward par 3 with a bunker protecting the left side of the green.

The par-5, 3rd offers a birdie chance if you can avoid the lake with your drive and negotiate a nest of deep bunkers with your second. The 5th is the shortest par 4 on this course and long hitters might be tempted to go for the green.  The 9th is a real test with a large bunker protecting the fairway, OB on the left and another bunker in front of the green.

The back nine at Bukit Unggul Country Club starts with a downhill dog-leg par 5 which demands a careful approach to a green surrounded by dense vegetation.  Par is a good score on the 11th which traverses a valley to an undulating green.  The 14th is a very pretty and short par-3 with water strategically placed to one side of the green and some pin positions require a carry over water to a narrow target. The 17th is another intimidating par-3 with a massive bunker stretching back from the green.

Unwind after your round at the Golfer’s Terrace serving local and international cuisine.

Bukit Unggul Country Club

"Great location and views - pity about the maintenance"

First course I played in Malaysia in 2008 and whilst it's not cosmetically the best kept course you can argue with the view and the locations. A really good test of golf with plenty of variety in the holes - Doesn't suit any particular shot shape you need them all here. Always found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. Really good value for money and def worth a try
