Eastern Star Golf Club in Pattaya is one of the few Robert Trent Jones Jr designed golf courses in Thailand set on the site of a former coconut plantation. A pretty forgiving links-style course which is usually in excellent condition and suitable for golfers of most standards.

As you would expect coconut trees are much in evidence but the relatively wide fairways means that they should not impede your progress too much as long as you can also avoid the numerous bunkers and 11 lakes!

Eastern Star provides a reasonable but challenging layout for golfers. It can get very hot playing golf in Pattaya during the summer season but due to its proximity to the gulf of Thailand the course is usually blessed with the cooling prevailing winds that blow at that time of the year.  The course is very picturesque and is framed by the nearby mountain range and is a perfect venue for a relaxing game on any golf holiday in Pattaya.

You need to play intelligent golf to score well as there are numerous doglegs where positioning is vital and you also need to make sure you are not blocked out by the tall trees. If the cooling sea breeze is blowing then this can add a further dimension.

The water hazards usually line one side of the fairway with and are often a factor as you approach the green so if a hook or a slice creeps into your game then you are going to get wet.

The signature hole is the attractive par-3 13th requiring a tee shot over a water hazard to a green with another water hazard on one side, a very deep bunker on the other and thick rough everywhere else. The par 5 4th hole is another hole worthy of mention with a narrow landing area an water all along the left had side.

Pattaya golfers will be amused by some of the very unusual and imaginative topiary including a hedge right in the middle of the fairway sculpted in the shape of the FA Cup on the second hole, right in the middle of the fairway.

Disappointing changing rooms and very average restaurant but this course offers excellent value for money in pleasant surroundings.

There is a hotel beside the golf course offering a range of 2/3 and 4 bed apartments.  Other facilities include a driving range and swimming pool.

Good course at low price

Reviewed by ; on
Played as a two ball on Wednesday morning, we finished 18 holes within 4 hours. The course was in good condition and greens ran about 9 on the stim. Friendly course layout except one of the short par 5 that didn’t really make much sense. hole 13 is a par 3 with two greens for players to choose hitting into, as one does not require golfers to hit over a water hazard. Would recommend to play Monday to Thursday, as caddie mentioned that Friday to Sunday gets busy with many five or even six somes. Course is popular with both locals and foreigners. Overall, good experience at such a low price.

Not a great golf day.....

Reviewed by ; on
Arriving at the reception first the green fee arrangement were not found, then I was ordered to pay the green fee again although I paid in advance, hassling with the teetime, etc. Another foreigner had a teetime 1 1/2 hours before, but he only was allowed to play with me, not alone. The lady wasn't very friendly. Waiting about 20 carts at the first hole, rushing marshals and starters, no putting green (in repair)..... But we could start in time at 2.00 p.m. The course is nice and overcrowded, no special holes except hole 13 with two greens, playing over water. If you miss the right green, your ball will stroll down a long way to the water. But nice.... There is only one place, where you can get drinks, no food, nothing to eat (hole Nr.11 or 12) The pace of playing was extremely slow, every time waiting. Moreover one flight before us looking for a lost ball for 20 minutes and it was already 6.00 pm. So we couldn't finish and had to stop after hole Nr. 15 because of the darkness. In my opinion it should be possible to play every course within a maximum of 4 1/2 hours, otherwise you should not give any teetimes after 1.00 pm. The course is overcrowded. Many Koreans, living nearby, and Thais, not many farangs, I suspect, they are not welcome in this place. In general, not a satisfying golf day, first time in Thailand. Moreover not cheap if you include greenfee, cart, caddyfee, tip for the caddy (good),for the driver, costs for going there and back to the city, arriving there after 8.00 p.m. I want to mention an outstanding, nice, polite, smiling, and joking driver, very good driving too, who had just to wait a long time, arranged by golfsavers. Thanks a lot.
