Montaña Golf Course is an impressive new golf development in Phu Tho Province, around an hour west of Hanoi. Set across dramatic mountain and valley terrain, the project has been designed by Spain’s Olazabal Design, the golf architecture company associated with two-time Masters champion José María Olazábal. It is the firm’s first golf course project in Southeast Asia.
The development is planned as two 18-hole championship courses covering approximately 150 hectares. The East Course is the first to open, with the West Course to follow. Both layouts have been designed at more than 7,000 yards, making Montaña a significant addition to the growing choice of golf courses within easy reach of Hanoi.
What immediately sets Montaña apart is the terrain. Rather than extensively flattening the site, the design makes use of the existing hills, ridges, valleys and natural changes in elevation. Golfers can expect elevated tees, substantial changes in height, strategic bunkering and holes where careful positioning is often more important than simply hitting for distance. The elevation difference across the golf course reaches around 110 metres, creating excellent views as well as plenty of variety from hole to hole.
The East Course combines the dramatic setting with a layout intended to challenge better golfers without becoming unnecessarily difficult for higher handicappers. Practice facilities are also being developed, including a driving range and dedicated short-game areas.
For golfers visiting Hanoi, Montaña Golf Course offers something quite different from the more established courses around the capital and is likely to become a popular addition to Hanoi golf holiday itineraries.
