Mountain Creek Golf Resort and Residences is a fully integrated golf resort in Khao Yai, Thailand and is memorable as the only golf course in Thailand designed by the one and only Severiano Ballesteros. This championship golf course has three 9-hole layouts named after the type of terrain:  Creek, Highland and Valley. The Creek and Valley courses are probably the most interesting combination as despite its name the Highland nine is flatter.  Seve has left his mark on the course in many ways but none more obvious than the large S-shaped bunker on the par-3 third of the Highland Course.

Some of the more interesting holes on the Creek Course include the par-3, second – quite a short hole by modern standards as you tee off from an elevated position with great view of the surrounding countryside   Trees line both side and also partially obstruct your view of the green which is fronted by a huge rock-filled gully – not much room for error here as you are either on the green or in the trees but at least there are no bunkers.  The par-4, fourth is another tough hole demanding a long carry over a large waste area to reach the fairway and a large bunker occupies the entire width of the fairway as you approach the green.  The seventh hole which is another par-4 requires a solid drive and correct positioning as the approach over a creek to a raised green with a tree partially blocking your view will fill you full of doubts.

On the Valley Course the par-3, third hole you tee off from raised tee boxes over some rocks to a triangular-shapes green protected by a large bunker on the left and a tree in front of the bunker just to the right of the green.  The par-5, fourth is arguably the most difficult hole on the course as you aim for the very narrow landing area protected by a line of bunkers along the left and trees on the right. If you are not a long hitter you will probably be faced with a blind second across the dogleg as the hole turns right.  The approach is to a table-top green with bunkers either side – if you run off the back you will disappear into deep rough.  The par-3, seventh is going to cause nightmares for high handicappers.  You play from elevated to boxes to an island green – which during the dry season is not always surrounded by water but the thick vegetation is just as bad.  The green is not that large and there are no bail-out areas – basically you will either be putting for a birdie or playing form the drop zone!

As I mentioned previously Seve has left his mark on the par-3, third in the guise of the large bunker in the shape of an S.  The target is quite small with a patch of rocks guarding the front-left of the green and two more bunkers either side.  Short and right and you will end up in Seve’s bunker – go long and you could finish in the trees behind the green.  The seventh is another very difficult par-3 with a narrow and undulating green with a small pond and five bunkers surrounding the green.  Lots of trouble over the back as well so this looks like a real potential card-wrecker.

The resort has plenty of other facilities including a five-star hotel, spa, sauna and massage room and swimming pool.

Creek course is more challenging and unfortunately didn’t complete.

My right hand was stung by a bee at hole 7 Creek course. The caddie immediately applied some medicine to me and drove straight to the clubhouse to get help. I was in such pain I had no time to say thank to her. Well done caddie!. We played 1st 9 hole at Valley course and the other 2nd 9 hole at Creek course. Hopefully next time will come again to conquer this course.

Enjoying golf without stress

After struggling with crowds of golfers sometimes on many courses in Thailand, this course is for those who like it different. Nature and peace with the feeling of playing alone, in the six days of staying there I didn't see many players on the course as well at the hotel or restaurant. I don't know why, but I think the main reason is, that this course is really off-road, far away from any "civilization". It's a mountainous course with 27 holes and not easy. Not hitting the fairway means deep rough, high grass, many areas with big stones. The course was very dry and hart, especially the greens, so the ball sometimes meets the point, but jumping outside. There is a not "very" big island green with about 120 m, but very small. You must have a special very high "skyshot" or a impressive backspin, otherwise the ball will roll away on the very fast green. There is also a signature hole with more than 550 yards, all impressive down with a wonderful view, but there are 3 "water hazards crossing the fairways. You need a very well-placed first shot to have a chance to make some "point". Many holes are going hillside, a cart should be used anyway. I lost some balls and the result was the worst of about 30 rounds on different courses in Thailand, though it might be better on a second round of this tricky course. There was a group of young South Koreans playing a fantastic golf with drives of more than 340 yards and aiming pars and birdies on every hole, but they are professionals ("pros") and staying there for 2 month over the South Korean winter. Mostly they start the "action" with an early round from 6.00 a.m, so the rest of the day may be it's your turn. Unfortunately, the restaurant at the clubhouse is by far not the best, but it has a big terrace with a wonderful view. And, as already mentioned, very quiet.

A treacherous course that you can skip on your trip

The course design is strange and weirdly complex. Fairways are poorly maintained, no yardage or sign board at any of the tee boxes. The club house is very dated and tired, poor facilities, towels are smelly barely any water in the faucets and restroom. Restaurant menu and service is very poor. Only saw one other group of 4 golfers on a Sunday. Speaks volumes of how this course would probably do well to just down their shutters permanently.
