Palm Springs Golf Club on Batam Island in Indonesia is just a short ferry ride from Singapore’s Tanah Merah Ferry terminal which is very close to Changi Airport.  When you arrive at Nongsapura Ferry Terminal it’s a 5-minute bus ride to the clubhouse which overlooks a very pretty palm-fringed beach.

The course features three excellent 9-hole layouts – Palm Courses, Resort Course and the Island Course and each of these layouts offer a very different challenge and whichever combination of nines you play to make up your round you will have a great day out.

The three Signature holes are on the challenging Palm Course and the first of these is the par 4, 2nd where you tee off from an elevated tee box towards the ocean with great views over the surrounding area.  The ideal position is just short of the water hazard which blocks your path to the green and big hitters need to take care that they don’t end up in the hazard.  The approach shot requires a medium iron carry over water to a green protected by a large bunker on the right hand side.  High handicappers can choose the shorter route and bail out left of the green.

The 7th is a very challenging par 3 where you again play from an elevated tee box with OB all along the left and a large pond protecting the right side of the flat putting surface and a large bunker just in front of it.

The Island Course has a very interesting opening banana-shaped par 5.  The traditional way to play this is to skirt the lake but if you are feeling brave then you can play to the water edge and there is a narrow gap through the trees and across the water hazard for your second – plenty of risk but some great rewards if you can negotiate this safely.  The second is a short par 3 with a blind tee shot over a deep gully so correct club selection is essential to avoid the hazard.  The 3rd is another exciting hole as you tee off over the trees to a fairway protected by a large bunker along the right side.  The 7th is a short par-3 with a mangrove swamp along the left and a large bunker on the right.  On the 8th the landing area is very narrow and the sloping fairway tends to kick your ball towards the hazard – if you can get in a good position off the tee then the hole is quite easy.

The Resort Course starts with a dogleg par 5 and you need to tee off close to the OB line to get in the best position for your approach.   The 4th is another difficult par 5 with a very narrow landing areas for your second shot between the pond on your right and bunkers on the left. The multi-tiered green can also cause trouble if you get in the wrong position.  The 7th is very demanding with a row of deep bunkers along the left of the raised fairway and OB along the right. This is followed by a very difficult par3 with a green surrounded by hazards.
