Red Mountain Golf Club

Holes 18 | Par 72 | Length 6314 m / 6905 y | Type Parkland | Architect John Morrow

The most spectacular golf course in Phuket and worth every penny

Set in the dramatically undulating landscape of an old tin mine amidst thick jungle, picturesque lakes and the red mountainside from which it took its name, Red Mountain Golf Club is quite simply one of the most spectacular courses in the world, let alone Thailand. Thanks to some memorable holes and the stunning views on offer from its high points, this is an essential stop on any Phuket golf holiday.

The range of challenges you will face runs the whole gamut: if you can negotiate the wind, water, sand and slopes you will find greens that range from small and flat to large and contoured. The only consistency is found in the uniform quickness of the putting surface and the pristine condition of the narrow fairways.

With more than its fair share of elevation changes and rocky outcrops, there are plenty of opportunities to take risks in search of rewards, but with a liberal array of water hazards this approach can be harshly punished. You’re best advised to trust the suggestions of the excellent caddies regarding club selection, and to hit straight.

The final six holes are the best, not only some of the most spectacular in Thailand but also some of the toughest. Attempting to hit the postage stamp green of the par-3 17th when you are teeing off from some 70 metres above is great fun, and the standout 18th requires some strategic shot making to make par, despite playing much shorter than its 500-yard length would suggest. As you drive up to the well stocked clubhouse in your compulsory golf cart (you really wouldn't want to walk this course), you will have a smile on your face regardless of the state of your scorecard.

Even though the green fees, the caddie's tip and the post-round beer mean you won't get change from US$150, you’ll feel it was worth every penny as a trip to Red Mountain Golf Club is an experience that will live long in the memory.

Still the best track in Phuket, a bit damp in places but a spectacular course and the scene of my second ever hole-in-one! :)

A brilliant test of golf off the blue tees and the greens were wickedly fast if you end up above the hole. A very happy day for me, I holed my tee shot on the par-3 from 159 with an 8-iron sending my caddy into raptures. Really lovely to be back in Phuket after two long years, and hope it’s much sooner before I come back again. Thank you!

Great experience!

The facilities are excellent; the check-in and caddie process is very good, and the caddies know the course. We unfortunately had a significant amount of rain during our round, so it’s difficult to say how consistent the greens were as they got more and more wet, but the condition was great. Interesting hole layouts and a fun course to play. A little on the expensive side, but a good experience.

Round spoilt by slow play

Reviewed by ; on
The booking went very smooth and efficient. The only problem was we were booked as a 2-ball ( with no joining player(s) ) behind 3 very slow 4-balls. The first group finally let us pass after 9 holes at the only open halfway house, but the next group apparently enjoyed that we had to wait for every shot between 5 - 10 minutes ( depending on how many balls they lost and searched for.....). There was no marshal going around and the caddies apparently have no authorization to request a faster group to play through.

Red Mountain - keep it in play!

Reviewed by ; on
I played Red Mountain in Phuket, Thailand. The booking process was effortless and there were no issues with checking in etc. The course is in good shape given the amount of rain they have been having. The design is picturesque where one cannot see other holes from the one you're playing... it is extremely tight as a result, but the penalty areas are well marked. The downside is that the course is accommodating to single and small groups which means letting people off on both tees without proper consideration/planning for the crossover times of players currently on course. This does not seem to be exclusive to Red Mountain though... Laguna was similar in that regard.
