Located 15 minutes from the city of Khon Kaen is the wonderful Dancoon Golf Club.

A par 72, measuring almost 7000 yards, Dancoon Golf Club is one of 4 18-hole courses in the Issan region of north-east Thailand.

Established in 2008 it was arguable the first course built to cater for the increasing number of golf tourists visiting the area looking for a more “rustic” approach to golf and to get away from the busier courses of the Bangkok region.

Designed by DC Golf Design the course features two distinctive loops of 9 holes, with the front nine shorter and somewhat easier than the longer more challenging back 9.

Set across gently undulating terrain, Dancoon Golf Club features generous fairways which are flanked in most part by small native trees, that all provide a frame for the hole, do not really cause that many difficulties if you stray from the fairway.

Water is a big feature throughout the course, and is one of few real obstacles that you have to avoid, well placed bunkers create a strategic headache, but shouldn´t really come into play.

In general, and unlike many resort courses, Dancoon Golf Club does not have the largest of greens, putting an impetus on accuracy if you want to walk away with a good score.

The course condition in general is very good, the bunkers if you find them are exceptional with plenty of sand and consistent throughout.

Greens are as mentioned small but perfectly formed, with a good speed and true rolling surfaces, and although subtle in their undulations you still need to take care over the ball.

Without doubt the most iconic of holes at Dancoon Golf Club is the par 3 11th. At 165 yards from the championship tee, it seems on the card to be a relatively easy par 3, but you are wrong. You have to hold your nerve from the tee to find this island green that is relatively small.

The par 5s are all reachable, but the pick of the 4 are the 9th and 18th which both require an approach to the green over the large water course that connects a small lake to the large feeder lake. A great way to finish either loop of 9.

It is the par 3s that stand out here as the most interesting holes, with the 7th also requiring a carry over water to the small, well protected green, longer than the signature 3rd hole the 7th is no less demanding. Miss the green and a bogey or worse is almost certain.

When you arrive you will be greeted by a Colonial style clubhouse that is more than adequate for the needs of travelling golfers, by no means the most extravagant it still caters for all your needs. A small hotel is on-site and offers the chance of a weekend getaway for those who travel around Thailand searching for little gems.
