Summit Windmill Golf Club Bangkok is very rural and pretty course spread over 160 acres and although close to the city is has been thoughtfully landscaped so you get the impression you are in the middle of the countryside. There are only a handful of holes on the course where water does not come into play and on many holes water runs all the way along one side of the fairway, more often than not the left side, with bunkers guarding the opposite side. If you have a tendency to hook the ball then you are in for a long day! One of best golf courses in Bangkok.
Nick Faldo is renowned for designing courses that are long and difficult and this is the case on the opening hole which stretches to 624 yards from the back tees and water along the left all the way to the green and you have to negotiate a stream which crosses the fairway ready to swallow your second shot. The 2nd is a very pretty par-3 with a water hazard protecting the left side of the fairway and running along the left side of the green – your best bet is to aim at the centre of the green. On the par-4, 3rd you drive from an island tee box onto a wide open landing area and then you are faced with yet another approach shot with water protecting the left side of the green. The 4th is longish par-3 but the green is pretty open and offers a generous landing area in front in case you miss hit your tee shot. The par-4 6th is rated as the most difficult hole on this course and requires a very long drive to have any chance of getting onto the green in regulation – a stream which crosses in front of the green adds to the challenge on this daunting hole.
One of the signature holes on the front nine at Summit Windmill Golf Club Bangkok is the 8th which is a par 4 with a large lake all along one side bordered by a large beach-style bunker and several more well-placed bunkers along one side of the fairway. The 9th is another hole typical of this course and is a slight dogleg with a long water carry over water off the tee box and you have to decide how much of the dogleg you dare take on with the reward of a relatively easy approach and the possible risk of ending up in the drink.
A slightly easier start to the back nine but beware the par-4 11th which is a dangerous dogleg with water protecting the right side of the fairway for a change bordered by a long beach bunker. The 12th is a short par-3 with an almost island green which makes what should be a simple approach more of a challenge. Plenty of bunkers on the 13th including an enormous one right in front of the tee boxes which is in the perfect position to collect any mishit drive. The 14th is an average length par-5 with the usual water protecting the left side and a narrow landing area with a very large and strategically placed bunker. The 16th also has a water hazard bordering the fairway which is in turn bordered by a beach bunker which runs all the way from tee to green with yet another group of sand traps protecting the right side of the fairway. The 17th is a wonderful par 3 with an oversized beach bunker protecting the front of the green.
Summit Windmill Golf Club Bangkok is ideal for golfers of any standard and you just need to pick a tee box which matches your skill level. Night golf is also on offer if you can escape from work early and tee off late afternoon. The golf courses is very close to the city and can get very crowded, especially at weekends so if you have a choice it’s much better to play midweek
A large, modern and almost opulent clubhouse with Fitness centre, pro shop and spa and a choice of restaurants. The course also an excellent golf lodge and if you prefer something a bit smarter then Le Méridien Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok Golf Resort & Spa is beside the club house.
