One of the first international standard courses in Hua Hin, Palm Hills Golf Club remains a firm favourite and although a bit short it’s an excellent layout with fast greens which are tricky to read. Good clubhouse with excellent bar and restaurant.
Hua Hin suffers from a water shortage and Palm Hills Golf Club seems to be affected more than most but in normal conditions the generous fairways are lush and flat but the well positioned water hazards make things a little more challenging.
Some say the course has a links feel to it but the tropical plants and trees which surround the course rather dispel that notion. The back nine which is more undulating offers good views over the Gulf of Thailand.
Fairly gentle start with a downhill dogleg par 4 with large bunker blocking the tiger line but if you play to the left of the fairway you have a good line into the green which has bunkers either side. The 2nd is the first of the par 5’s and is an intimidating tee shot with water both sides of the fairway and narrow approach to the greens with bunkers either side and behind the green. The 3rd is a short par 3 which is pretty easy if you can avoid the large bunker protecting the right side of the green. The 4th is a short dogleg par 4 with a narrow landing area between the large fairway bunker and the trees on the left of the fairway. The 5th is a short but tough par 4 with water along the left and a tricky approach with water a bunker and a ditch protecting the left side of the green. The 8th is an interesting par 3 which plays slightly uphill across a water hazard and then it’s on to the 9th, the most difficult hole on the course with a tree blocking the left side of the fairway and a narrow green sloping quite sharply from right to left.
The back nine at Palm Hills Golf Club starts with some of the best holes on the course and includes the 11th, a long uphill par-3 and the prevailing wind can often make club selection difficult. The 12th is a challenging dogleg par 5 with water on the right off the tee and a very narrow landing area for your 2nd. The 14th is a testing par-4 dogleg with water down the left and across the fairway and if you try to play safe the bunkers are positioned to trap you. Maybe an iron off the tee is advisable. A bit of respite on the par 3 15th which is pretty straightforward and the par 5 16th is a scoring opportunity if you can keep to the left of the fairway and avoid the trees which can block your approach.
A really nice resort course which is still in excellent condition and well worth playing on any golf holiday in Hua Hin and the green fees here are a bit cheaper than some of its more illustrious neighbours.
