You do not have to travel far outside the capital city of Tokyo to enjoy some of the top golf courses in Japan.  In fact, it takes little over an hour by car to leave the neon lights of Tokyo behind and reach the delightful setting of Eagle Lake Golf Club.

This golf course is situated close to the east coast of Japan, in the Chiba Prefecture.  This is known as a popular place for playing golf in Japan and with courses such as Eagle Lake Golf Club, it is easy to see why.

Eagle Lake Golf Club was established in 2008 and is just 20 minutes from the town of Tomisato and 15 minutes from Narita International Airport.  The golf course plays to just over 6,500 yards from the back tee and is a par-72, 18-hole course.  There is a choice of three tee boxes on each hole which are back, regular and forward and you can choose the one best suited to your handicap.

One of the key features of Eagle Lake Golf Club is the surrounding forest and the trees line many of the holes.  This can be seen from the first hole, which is a par-4.  Playing to 440 yards from the back tee, the fairway is narrow and lined with trees.  There are three large bunkers, two on the right side and one on the left side of the fairway.  There are large slopes on the right side of the fairway covered in rough and the green is surrounded by trees.

This hole gives you a good idea of what to expect during the round at Eagle Lake Golf Club but there is more to come.

The par-4 4th hole provides the first sight of water and it is in the form of a lake on the right side of the fairway.  You can avoid needing to play an approach shot over the lake if you play down the left side of the fairway but for the longer hitters, you may be tempted to take on the water and land the ball closer to the green.

There is no avoiding playing over the water on the par-3 12th hole.  A lake splits the tee box and the green, the latter of which is also protected by two bunkers at the front.  There is also a large expanse of water on both sides of the fairway on the par-4 13th hole and the right side of the 14th hole.  Water continues to be a feature from here until the end of the round.

Eagle Lake Golf Club is not one where long distance will always be rewarded.  Knowing when to use a shorter club off the tee and playing for position rather than distance is the best option on this course.

Additional facilities at Eagle Lake Golf Club include a driving range, short game practice area, pro shop and bilingual staff, offering golf lessons including video swing analysis.

Eagle Lake Golf Club

Quite difficult and often crowded

Excellent golf course with some tough holes and tricky greens. Can get crowded even midweek so prepare for a slow round. Carts are old style with no remote control
