Kandy is the second largest city in Sri Lanka's located in centre of the island surrounded by hills and mountains. Many people consider it to be the cultural capital of Sri Lanka and was added as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988. The climate here is much cooler than Colombo and the city is also smaller and more compact making exploring easier.
The city has a small city centre circled by the lush tropical rain forest hill country all around which is full of monkeys and other exotic animals and birds. Kandy is also a great shopping destination with a wide range of goods of all kinds are available for purchase at very low prices. There are also numerous bake shops offering delightful local delicacies all around the city centre. A visit to the Temple of The Tooth is top of the lost of things to do in Kandy. This is a beautiful temple right in the middle of Kandy which is supposed to be the resting place of Buddha's tooth. The temple is also sometimes known as the sacred tooth relic.
Another popular place to visit are the Royal Botanical Gardens which has the reputation of being one of the most beautiful places in Kandy and maybe Sri Lanka. The gardens are beautifully maintained and depending on the time of year you should see a profusion of beautiful flowers.
