Angkor Golf Resort

Holes 18 | Par 72 | Length 6856 m / 7498 y | Type Parkland | Architect Nick Faldo

Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap was designed by Nick Faldo who has managed to build an immaculately conditioned golf course which is not only visually stunning but will also provides a great challenge for the lower handicappers and huge enjoyment for all.

Angkor Golf Resort is not far from the centre of town or the airport and this perfectly manicured course has been designed to ensure excellent playing conditions year round.  The course has been designed to be a fair test of everyone’s abilities – difficult enough for better golfers but without the long carries that can destroy the enjoyment of the high handicapper. Like many of Faldo’s course it is and plays long and if you are playing from the back tees your driver will need to be working if you are to get to the green in regulation.  As you would expect there are plenty of thoughtfully placed hazards in the shape of blindingly white bunkers and plenty of water hazards.

Although Angkor Golf Resort is a relatively young course, many of the shrubs and trees have started to mature which adds to the challenge.  The greens are fast and true but Mr Faldo has tried to fool you with some subtle breaks and awkward pin positions.

On the front nine the pick of the holes is the very long par-5 3rd which is more than 600 yards long and starts with an intimidating tee shot through a narrow gap lined by trees.  The par-4 7th is another monster of a hole measuring nearly 500 yards which is probably best played as a par -5 for all but the very best golfers.  The front nine ends with medium length par-3 with a carry over the natural wetlands to a well-guarded green.

The back nine starts with a sharp dog-leg with water all along the left side and crossing in front of the green which requires a careful approach.  The 11th offers more of the same with a large water hazard along the left and in front of the green but will tempt the long hitters to ignore it all and go straight for the green.  If you arrive to this point with your card intact the final three holes will offer still more challenges.  The long par-5 16th requires an approach over water to a green which slopes away from you towards another water hazard.  Water again comes into play alongside the long par-3 17th, and you are playing to a narrow green guarded by a large bunker.  The finishing hole is a dog-leg to the left with water coming into play most of the way to the green.

Angkor Golf Resort features a modern clubhouse that has been recently expanded and improved with catering provided by Raffles Hotel and they offer a selection of expertly prepared local and international dishes.  The course is superbly maintained and this has been recognised with the Asian Golf Monthly award for the best course in Cambodia and a nomination for the Top 3 Maintained Courses in Asia.

Not quite what was expected

Fairways were not up the standard of the course in general and many bunkers were unraked. Good course but not quite what I'd been anticipating!

By far the best course in Siem Reap

An excellent course in great condition but its long and very tough off the blue tees, Fairways like carpets and excellent, medium-paced greens. Caddies were pretty good and the service and food in the clubhouse was outstanding.

Pricey, but excellent course

Reviewed by ; on
This is the second time I have played the course ( first time 3 years ago). Seems this time the service and attitude were more professional. The course was in excellent shape, grass driving range and putting and chipping greens. Putting green was significantly slower than actual ones, but I have been warned by the caddy. For mid-handicappers, the fairway bunkers are positioned just right, so you have to plan your shots. ( if you drive 250+ yards, ignore it). Greens and pin locations were challenging, with a lot of the green warped and shaped, so approach shots and putting needs to be planned as well. My caddy was walking me through the course with hole planner, something which was not too common in other courses in Asia (hence the professional remark). The issuance of a player card which you can use in refreshment spots and restaurant and settle the bill at the end is also a nice convenience, no need to drag around a bunch of bills. Very enjoyable course, it helped I played well taht day.

Fabulous Condition and Great Service!

Reviewed by ; on
This is a Nick Faldo designed beauty of a course, that is in fabulous condition, and rated as one of the best courses in Asia. August is one of the hotter months and temperatures go from 30-36 Degrees, so take a complete set of dry clothing ! The arrival is extraordinary; as you get out of your car in front of the Clubhouse, where 10 Caddies line up the steps, to greet you with a welcome “Wai”. You can then take your time to choose one, or take the next one the waiting list. They are immaculately turned out, young and easy on the eye… ! English is spoken by most of them but better to ask if they do. The Clubhouse is modern attractive, and well equipped with a good Proshop, and Restaurant serving Korean and Cambodian food. The Locker room is immaculate with great showers, and free toiletries. I found my own name on my Locker .. impressive…. Hire clubs shoes etc all available. I was then personally greeted by the Club Professional Alan Martin, who was very friendly and lent me a Driver, which I had forgotten ! A nice detail is a free course guide booklet The Blue tees are very long for your average player, but the Whites are more friendly. The course is well shaped, and bunkers are very much a feature, firm sand, and water will come into play ! The Greens are fast……,and a delight to putt on.
