Holes 18 | Par 72 | Length 6415 m / 7016 y | Type Parkland | Architect Nicklaus Design

Mission Hills Golf Club is the most scenic course in Phuket with many holes running beside the sea.  A Jack Nicklaus design which can play very long depending on the prevailing wind.  Greens are a little slow but course generally in good shape.

When staying on an island it’s great to play on a course like Mission Hills Golf Club which is located so close to the sea and Jack Nicklaus has made best use of the natural surroundings by incorporating plenty of water hazards and what seems like acres of sand.

The most interesting holes on the front 9 are the par-5 2nd which involves a tricky tee shot over a sandy waste area and then a daunting approach to an island green and the 4th which is the first of the ocean holes offering wonderful views of the islands.  This medium length par 3 can be very tricky depending on which way the wind is blowing and it’s not easy to find the putting surface.  The 5th hole is sand almost from tee to green and requires a careful tee shot to avoid the waste bunker.  The undulating fairway adds to the problem as you line up your approach.  The 7th is a long par 3 with water all along the right wide but this does not really come into play unless you choose to play from the black tees.  The 8th is a short par-4 dogleg and positioning off the tee is essential to goof scoring - if you choose the right line then you have a very simple approach to the green but if you go too far right you end up in the trees with no clear shot at the green.

The opening hole on the back nine at Mission Hills Golf Club needs a good drive to be in the best position for your approach to the well-protected green.  The 11th is a short par 3 which should not present too many problems unless the wind is blowing.  The 12th hole is for long hitters and a rather ambitious 481 yard par-4 needs a 250 yard hit from the black tees and then a long calculated approach to a well-protected green.  A bogey is a realistic expectation for most of us but at least you can admire the ocean view scenery while you’re at it.  The 13th is a very long par-5 playing towards the sea and you need to pick your way between the huge sandy areas if you are to get on in regulation to a green which is difficult to hold.  The 14th is a short par 4 but the green is tricky and any over hit shot will end up in deep trouble off the back of the green.  The next three holes offer real scoring opportunities – the 15th is th shortest par 5 on the course and reachable in two for long hitters and the 16th is a short par 3 but the green is protected by bunkers both sides and  a canal beyond.  The 17th is a short par 4 and as long as you can avoid the deep hollow along the left then your second to the green can put you in a good scoring position.  Great finishing hole with water all along the right hand side and it requires a very carefully placed tee shot to avoid the bunkers and get in the best position to attack the pin.

Maintenance of the course and especially the greens are an issue from time-to-time but we have seen a great improvement lately and we will advise you if there are any change to the situation.

The facilities on offer are superb and the hotel is in excellent condition with a first rate spa. The food is expensive but justifiably so, producing excellent Thai cuisine. The drinks are also expensive, but for a holiday visit you may be happy to pay the prices just this once.

Badly maintained and dishonest caddy

Reviewed by ; on
Assigned 1 brand new caddy w/o informing beforehand, out of the 2 caddies that we had. Of course, they collected the caddy fees. After we finished the game, we gave some tips despite the extremely inexperienced caddy, and the one with more experience said the minimum tips is 500 Baht per caddy. Reluctantly we topped up the tips to 500 baht each. After we complained, the club said that new caddies do not expect tips and are supposed to inform us before we tee off that she is new. Hence, the club denies any responsibility. They offered that the inexperienced caddy return us the tips. We didn't take the tips back but just wanted to make sure that someone knows about the situation. We didn't wait for the dishonest caddy to show up. The condition of the course was... really bad. While I expect that part of it is due to the rain, the greens are not well kept. We were told the greens were very slow and we soon know why.

Long past it’s prime - Excellent pace of play. Good caddy.

They should be ashamed as to how they have let the maintenance of the course go. The design is always good so you try and let the other obvious issues go. I wanted to hit about 20 shots on the driving range before the round as I hadn’t played in six weeks. No problem but when I finished they asked for 100 baht! I expected to have water in the cart but no, buy two at 20 baht each. Folks, we are not talking about large sums of money here but we are talking about a very poor impression. On the plus side my caddy, May 89, was very good and I relied on her to read the greens. Mission Hills should know that they have a very good ambassador. Crab grass on the soggy fairways. Bunkers full of grass and weeds. Would not waste my time playing this course again.
