You do not have to stick to the three main islands of Japan when playing golf in the country.  You could travel south to the Okinawa prefecture which consists of over 100 islands.  The islands are located in the East China Sea and they enjoy a tropical climate, making them perfect for a relaxing round of golf.

One such golf course is situated near Nago City, the largest city in the northern part of the main island is called Kanehide Kise Country Club.

The course enjoys a lovely position inside the Yanbaru Forest and the trees make for a tremendous setting, almost like an amphitheatre around some of the greens.  The golf course at Kanehide Kise Country Club is a par-72, 18 hole championship golf course which plays to just over 7,200 yards from the back tees.

The golf course is split into two sets of nine holes, the first of which is called the Wood 9.  This set of holes is the one players often begin with but you can start from whichever set of nine you wish.  From the very first hole on the Wood 9, you begin playing into the forest but the fairway is wide enough on the first to hit a confident drive.  However, the closer you get to the green, the more bunkers you will find.

This holds true for much of the Wood 9 at Kanehide Kise Country Club.  The trees and bunkers are the main hazards, with a shot over trees required to get the best position on the green on the 2nd hole.  The 3rd hole is the only hole on the Wood 9 which requires a shot over water, with sand being the main hazard throughout.

The Ocean 9, as the name suggests, features more water hazards and there are a series of ponds to contend during the round.  The 2nd, 5th and 8th holes are all good examples of where water comes into play, with the 5th hole having a green which is surrounded by water.  Anything but an accurate shot could see you in trouble.  The 8th hole has a marsh along the right side of the fairway in addition to a waterfall but if you go too far left of the narrow fairway you will be in the rough.

There are plenty of challenges at Kanehide Kise Country Club and this golf courses comes highly recommended having played host to the PGA Championship Nissin Noodles Cup.

In addition to the marvellous golf course at Kanehide Kise Country Club you will find a driving range, putting green, chipping and bunker practice area and a tea house on each set of 9 holes.  The clubhouse is home to a restaurant, pro shop, sauna and accommodation.  You can stay overnight in the club lodge or in one of the deluxe cottages, each of which boasts an outdoor private swimming pool.

Kanehide Kise Country club

Lovely course

The course was not too difficult but the main challenge was dealing with the wind. The course was in good condition and the caddies were excellent.
